There may be times when a funeral service is too soon for you and your family to celebrate the life of someone who has died and you want a simple private ceremony in which to express your grief. However, when the time is right you may want to have a memorial service to celebrate the life of the person you have lost. This can give you more freedom of time and place. It gives you the opportunity to invite more people to share their memories.
A memorial service may also be appropriate where family and friends are living all around the world and you want more time to be able to get people together than is practical for organising a funeral. Although some modern crematoria have multi-media facilities that allow people from across the world to participate in a funeral service this is not widely available yet. A memorial service can be held in a venue with multi-media facilities allowing anyone who wants to participate wherever they are.
